Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Slowly add the boiling water while mixing on low speed until the batter is smooth.
- Pour the batter into your prepared baking pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan while you prepare the frosting.
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the cocoa powder until smooth. Remove from heat and stir in the milk and vanilla. Gradually whisk in the powdered sugar until the frosting is smooth and glossy.
- Pour the warm frosting over the warm cake and spread evenly. Let the frosting set for about 15 minutes before slicing and serving. This allows the frosting to soak slightly into the cake for that signature fudgy texture.
Notes
Use room temperature ingredients for easier mixing and better texture. Don't overmix the batter - stop as soon as ingredients are combined. The boiling water helps bloom the cocoa powder for deeper chocolate flavor.
