- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- Make three wells in the dry ingredients. Pour the warm water into one well, vegetable oil into another, and vinegar into the third.
- Add the vanilla extract directly over the mixture. Stir everything together until just combined - be careful not to overmix.
- Pour the batter into your prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Don't overmix: Stir just until ingredients are combined - overmixing can make cake tough; Use room temperature ingredients for even incorporation; Spoon flour into measuring cups and level off - don't scoop; Cake should spring back when lightly touched
